Video III-IV

Pass the Torch!

Students will be filming stock footage for use by next year's Video 1 students.

You have two choices:

1. Advanced students will script a story that is an instructional "process."

Help pass on your skill/knowledge by filming an event that will be used to teach new students how to edit video together. It should be very easy and fun for you to do. You have to do your BEST work so the noobs can see quality.

For example, it could be a student leaving the school building, going to the car, opening door, sitting, closing door, buckling seat belt, putting key in ignition, and eventually driving off. The script won’t take even one class period. Then go shoot it. Shoot at least 3 good takes, a long shot, medium shots, close-ups, and at least one take that would not match up in the editing room without creating a jump cut. Basically shoot it three times using different shot/angels. That way the noobs have something to choose from when editing.

2. MYSTERY AT PT

Advanced students will shoot the opening “scavenger hunt shots” from the MYSTERY assignment. The shots will be used to exemplify QUALITY camera work/tripod use/smooth zooming etc. Once filmed, you will use the shots to edit together the provided script, record CLEAR V/O’s and put it all together.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO WRITE THE ENDING….but….BONUS if you do and it’s GOOD. It would be great to have a “finished” product to show next year.

I will show this to the 1st years to give them an idea of what I am looking for.

Mon-Friday

The class will be finishing up their photos and organizing them into order to tell their story. This week we will focus on camera movements, transitions, and how we direct the attention of our viewers to what we (as Cinematographers) want them to focus on.

Part of the process is trying something to see if it works and then possible doing it over again. Groups will find that come pics need to be retaken, some need to be altered and some work just fine. It will take the week to get things in place the way we want them. Some groups might be slightly ahead of others, and they will begin placing sound fx, transitions, music and other alterations in their projects

Mon-We will begin the Read Across America Unit. The students will be choosing a children's book and capturing the images from the pages and using them to tell the story with narration, music, sound fx, transitions and more. Prior to break, we reviewed a popular book and then looked at the movie version with focus on how it was adapted from the pages of a book to the big screen. How did a 20 page book turn into a 90 minute movie?
