Reading..

Monday- Wednesday….Before the project begins…group leaders are responsible for checking tests from Friday. Then, Book Club groups will be working on their end of the Novel Project. Each group has a choice of creating an i movie or power point presentation advertising their books. This activity will be used for next year’s classes to help them decide which book they would like to read for this activity. The project will be worked on in class during Reading and Language Arts periods. Due date is Thursday presentations are scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Monday- Friday…Final week for Book Club and packets. All groups will have read all chapters and completed all the activities that go along with their novels. Novel projects will be introduced on Friday and complete by the 25th. Each group will have an option to create a PP or i movie persuading others to read their novels. This will be worth 40 points.

Lang. Arts

Monday & Tuesday…. Final two days to write their 2018 Graduation Letters. We will seal all envelopes on Wednesday. Be sure to supply an envelope addressed like the example in the packet. Also, remember to add any pictures, or small items to your envelope before the sealing ceremony.

Wednesday…Seal envelops and give to Miss Popovich for delivery to the high school. Use the rest of the week to finish novels.

Thursday & Friday…Book Club wrap up.

Social Studies

Monday- Project alert…last lesson.

Tuesday –Friday….Finish discussing Sparta/Athens by completing the Chapter 10 outline as a group. This outline covers 10.1-10.3. This will take classes all week to complete. All work will be completed in class since we are using in class resources. Next week we will review and prepare for a Chapter 10 test.

1. All packed lunches must be DISPOSIBLE.

2. Hats and sunglasses are permitted.

3. Food is sold on the boat, so money is optional. No more than 10-15 dollars is needed.

4. Be sure to wear tennis shoes as we will be doing a lot of walking and sandals may leave blisters.

5. Finally, remember sunscreen if sunny!

Tuesday….Project Alert.

Wednesday….Students will view a short DVD on the events of the Trojan War before moving on to Chapter 10,….Sparta and Athens. Begin reading and discussing Chapter 10. Distribute the Ch. 10 outline. Continue working on this tomorrow.

Thursday….Continue working on Chapter 10. Complete the outline by the end of class next Monday (14th)

Friday…Field Trip….Heinz Field and Gateway Clipper.


READING

Monday-Book Club….students will finish generating test questions for chapters 1-10. Group leaders must have all tests typed by tomorrow. Groups need to read up to and including chapter 20.

Tuesday…groups will be taking a quiz on chapters 1-10. Group leaders will be responsible for distributing and checking tests. Continue reading.

Wednesday-Thursday …..Book Club…read and complete a Cause and Effect wkst for points. Groups will make up another test for chapters 11-20. The test needs to include all types of questions…True and False, Completion, Matching, Multiple Choice. Each test must have 10 questions.

Friday…Field Trip Day!!


Language Arts

Monday-Wednesday (16th) ….. Students will be working on a Futuristic Graduation Writing Activity. Students will be handwriting a two page long letter describing them as they are NOW. They must include things such as, their friends, current events, sports, what 6th grade is like etc… Students will have one week to complete this assignment. Letters will be received in 2018 prior to graduation.

Thursday…Give time to study and then distribute the 9.2 test and collect. Students will then work on the second half of their Color and Learn lesson. This will be due next Friday.

Friday…Hand back and discuss the test. Give time to work on the Color and Learn. This is due at the end of the period.

Monday…..Switch group leaders today and check pg. 3 of packet……Important vs. Interesting for points. Groups will need to choose 10 spelling words for their book. This student generated spelling test will be given in LA class of Thursday. Finally, groups will meet and read silently the chapters assigned by the leader. Reminder….. vocab. test will be giving tomorrow on all 15 words.

Tuesday…give time to review and then give the Vocab. test. Group leader will be responsible for checking and turning in the tests to me. The rest of class will be given to complete an assignment out of their packets.

Monday…...Finish the comparative/superlative packet and review for Wednesday’s test. Introduce the Collage project. Students will search to find examples for comparatives and superlatives in magazines and or newspapers to glue on to construction paper. This Collage will be due at the end of class on Tuesday.

Tuesday….Review for the test on Comp./Superlatives tomorrow with the Collage project. Share projects.

Wednesday….Give a few minutes to look over materials before distributing the Comparative/Superlative Unit test. Reminder, the spelling test will be on Thursday. Begin an direct and indirect object unit.

Monday…..Finish viewing Soul Surfer and then explain our final Novel Lesson. Students will be allowed to choose a novel of choice. Each group will be responsible for reading chapters, assigning hmwk. and choosing a group leader every week. Teacher created tests and quizzes on the book will be periodically given as well. Each group will also be responsible for an end of the book project.

Tuesday-Friday… Novel groups will generate a 10-15-word vocabulary word list. Vocabulary definitions’ will be due on Wednesday. The teacher will also approve hmwk assignments assigned by this week’s group leader.

Language Arts/No spelling this week.

Monday…..New Unit…Comparatives and Superlatives. Distribute a pre-test to assess knowledge, no grade. Begin completing the Comparative/Superlative outline pgs. 1-20. Work on pgs. 1-3. May need to finish explaining our Novel Unit if we ran out of time during 1st period.

READING/swbat identify examples of different types of Author’s Purpose as well as answer questions regarding this week’s selection.

Monday…Check P pg. 112 and vocab. folds. Then listen to the story…pgs. 368-379 and discuss with P pg. 114. Assign the Author’s Purpose activity that is due on Wednesday. Selection test will be on Wednesday. Be sure to study.

Tuesday ….Complete all practice (pgs. 116-118). Allow students time to look for books that relate to different examples of Author’s Purposes.

Wednesday….Present the Author’s Purpose activity for a grade. Give a few minutes to study and then give the selection test.

Thursday & Friday….. Students will be viewing the movie Soul Surfer to reinforce our stories theme of Perseverance. This will take two days.

LANGUAGE ARTS/swbat identify Adverbs in a sentence and tell what they modify as well as participate in a spelling bee contest.

Monday….Review for an Adverb test by search and identifying Adverbs in children’s books, completing a review wkst. plus a practice test.

Tuesday…Give the Adverb test after allowing a few minutes to study. Hand out the Spelling Bee Word List. We will be participating a Spelling Bee Contest on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

Thursday ….Instruct students to create a Vocabulary Fold like they do in science class. Complete practice page 112. Review the tested skill…Author’s Purpose.

Friday…...Listen to the story on pgs. 368-379. Discuss Author’s Purpose.

Wednesday….. Share papers.

LANGUAGE ARTS/swbat correct common grammatical mistakes and spell previous spelling words correctly.

Monday….Show a Grammar Video and discuss bad grammar. Work through a grammar packet to celebrate National Grammar month.

Tuesday….Grammar wksts. + divide the class into two groups for a Spelling BEE.

Wednesday…. Continue the Spelling Bee. Last three standing win a small prize.

Monday…Continue viewing the Titanic movie. Review vocab. words.

Tuesday….Have students write brief journal entry explaining the emotional roller coaster they felt while watching Titanic. Explain what the movie made them think about?? Share a few entries. Play a synonym/plate review game to prepare for tomorrow’s test. Finish reading our Scholastic book in groups.

Wednesday… Give the vocab. test and explain the Titanic project. The project will be worth 20pts. and go into our writing folders.

Thursday & Friday…work on the Titanic project…being a passenger on the boat.

Monday-Intro new spelling words for the week. This week’s spelling has a twist. Students will need to know definitions as well as how to spell the word correctly. Monday….Titanic unit. Define vocabulary and listen to the story. Pass out permission slips to view the second half of the movie Titanic.

Tuesday…check vocab. and preview the story. Complete P pgs.

Play the plate game with vocab. A vocab. word is written in the center of the plate and students (in small groups write a synonym on the plate the matches the center vocab. word. Once groups are finished they will turn the plate over and write antonyms for that same work. Discuss outcomes.

Wednesday…No class due to bully meeting.

Thursday- Complete the remaining practice book pgs. + discuss the history behind the ship. Read hard back (Scholastic) books from the series. Collect all permission slips.

Friday…Watch the movie….start with the second VHS…make sure permission slips have been collected.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Monday-Friday…. Start a new unit on ADJECTIVES…..describing words. Distribute packets and begin completing several pages per day. Most of the work will be finished during class, so there will not be a lot of homework this week. We will pick up spelling since we are back in our Reading books. Spelling this week goes with the story TITANIC. Pre-test will be given on Wednesday and final test on Friday. No packets as we will be switching it up and completing a TIC-TAC-TOE.

Social Studies

Monday-Thursday…We are heading to Lab 209 to create a brochure of India. Students have been researching and now have a rough idea of how to persuade people to vacation to India. Students have two choices…..to create a brochure via Word OR an i movie. If they chose to create an i movie, they were permitted to work with one other person of their choice. These projects will be presented on Friday.

Define charismatic, sleuthing, mimics, array, significance, despondently, sponsoring and anonymous. Reinforce definitions by reading the Unusual Robot on pgs. 338 & 339. If time, complete P. pg. 103.

Tuesday….Complete P pg. 104 in class. Divide class into 4 groups of 8 students. Assign roles, and read play in small groups (pgs. 340-353). If not completed continue reading play during 5th period LA.

Wednesday…Listen to the play to reinforce comprehension. Answer questions on pg. 354 and P pg. 105. Give clues to help students draw conclusions about the selection.

Thursday…..Give the selection test for selection and complete P pgs. 107, 108 & 110 in class.

Friday…...Novel PRT!

Monday…Give 5-8 minutes to study for the 4.3 test. Give test and collect. Students will work on their Gandhi Timeline Activity they started on Friday once completed with the test. This is worth 15pts.

Tuesday & Wednesday…Read and discuss 4.4 and complete the outline in class.

Thursday & Friday….Review information to prepare for a small quiz on 4.4. Introduce the Unit active of creating a Travel Brochure using Word. We will be travelling to the computer Lab all next week to work on this project.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday… Students will be working of PSSA skills this week. The follow topics will be covered over a four-day period. Grades will be taken on class participation and hmwk. Be sure to be prepared for every class!

LANGUAGE ARTS/No spelling this week!

Monday-Take the 4-Sight test/PRT ( Lion, Witch and Wardrobe)/Valentine to parents/guardians.

*Tuesday-Explain and assign the Black History Month Informative Paper. This paper will be done outside of class. Students will have two weeks to complete his/her assignment. A detailed outline will be given to all students explaining the requirements. Continue working thru numbers 1-4 in the Sentence Unit (pgs. 2-12)

Wednesday- Instruct students to create a Valentine Cinquain to give to someone special. Students will follow detailed instruction, and all poems must be complimentary and send a positive message. This will be with 10 points. Continue working in Sentence Unit, sections 1-4.

Thursday- Finish working on section 4 of the Sentence Unit ….reveiw for a small quiz, which will be tomorrow.

Friday- Give the Sentence Quiz on sections 1-4. Complete section 5 pg. 15.

Monday…...View the Mt. Everest movie and discuss. Finish reading and work through the 4.1 outlines. Test this week!

Tuesday…. Pass out the review lesson w/ pg. 53. Test on 4.1 Wednesday….20pts. A packet of notes will be coming home to help prepare for the test tomorrow

Wednesday….. Give a few minutes to look over notes and distribute test. Have students preview 4.2 by completing the RR worksheet the ME column only. Then, in groups students will complete column #2. Finally, we will look in our books for the correct answers to the last column.

Thursday… Hand back the 4.1 tests and discuss. Start Egypt project presentations…cont. to Wednesday of next week.

Friday…Begin presenting Egyptian Projects.

READING

MondayLook at pgs.2 74-275 and access prior knowledge from social studies class to make a prediction. Read “The Mysterious Limousine” on pgs 276-277. Discuss the highlighted vocab. words. Use context clue skills from last week to write definitions. Complete Transparency #12 as a closing for class.

Tuesday….Compete P pgs. 83 & 84 and read the selection on pgs. 278-294…Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street. Pass out the character trait wkst. that coincides with the story. The wkst. will be due on Wednesday.

Wednesday…..Discuss wkst. from yesterday’s class and the selection by using the comprehension questions on pg. 295. Explain the Character Study activity and complete. This activity may carry over to Thursday’s class.

Thursday…..Continue working on Character Study and finish all P pgs. for Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street (except pg. 85). Selection test and PWA will be given tomorrow.

Friday…..Give the selection test and PWA, collect and grade. Begin reading The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe as a class PRT novel. This novel needs to be with each student for first and second periods.

LANGUAGE ARTS/FYI....comma test has been moved to Wednesday (2/6)

Monday….reveiw for the Comma test on Tuesday and introduce the next set of spelling words for…..Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street.

Tuesday….give a few minutes to look over the rules for commas and distribute the test. Collect….PRT after test or work on spelling packets.

Wednesday….Give the pre-test for spelling and check. Hand back the Comma test and discuss. Begin the next unit of study….SENTENCES with a pretest on subject/predicate.

Thursday…..Check spelling packets and complete pgs. in the sentence packet related to Collective Nouns.

Friday…..Give the final spelling test to those students that did NOT earn a 20/20 on Wednesday’s pre-test. Continue working on Collective Nouns. A quiz will be given after section 4.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Monday…..Discuss Egypt test and introduce Chapter 4..INDIA. We will be working on a map for the rest of the week along with India’s flag. Students will understand the meaning behind the colors used in the flag. A map test will follow as it for the Middle East. Special supplies are welcomed.

Tuesday…. Map and flag work today.

Wednesday….. Check maps and start practicing for the map test, which will be on Friday.

Thursday…. Complete another practice test. If time, pass out the Reading Readiness worksheet for 4.1. Assign 4.1 for homework

Friday….. Give time to study for the map test. Have students work on the 4.1 outline after the test and finish for Monday.

READING

Monday-Give a few minutes to look over the selection before giving the selection test. Begin our PSSA review. Explain to the class what will be taking place over the next few weeks. Start review with words that have multiple meanings.

Tuesday, Thursday and Friday… PSSA review. Students will be reinforcing tested skills, such as, drawing conclusions, setting, main idea, multiple meaning words, author’s purpose, and making inferences. Most of the work will be completed in class, but there may be assignments that are started in class, and need to be finished for homework. Grades will be taken from class work.

*Wednesday-no class due to PSSA meeting.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Monday-Friday…Continue working of the Comma Unit in class. Most of the work will be in-class assignments. A Comma Unit test will be given around the second week of February. A mixed review will be completed before the Unit Test to review all 8 items.

*SPELLING will RESUME. Students will be tested on the Juan Verdades words from last week’s selection. Remember…..words on Monday, pre-test on Wednesday, packets due on Thursday and final test on Friday.

Monday….Practice Rap for half the class and present.

Tuesday…..Finish any Rap presentations from Monday. Begin working on the Vocabulary Building and Bingo review wksts. The Egypt Unit Test will be on Thursday. It will be 75 pts. Start studying using the study guide given today.

Wednesday….Check all review sheets and discuss the study guide. Test is tomorrow!!!

Thursday….Give a few minutes to review material before distributing the CPS units and taking the test.

Friday….Discuss results of the Unit test and begin our new unit of study…..INDIA.

Reading

Monday….Discuss the results of the 4-Sight tests. Distribute i-pod pass to those who earned advanced, proficient or increase their score by 3 points. Students will also complete their bar graph chart documenting individual results. Present students’ Sisters Grimm portraits and make sure all folders have been collect.

Tuesday …..Start Unit 3…..have a group discussion about the story’s theme(folktales) and vocab. words…FORMAN, EMPLOYEE, GRITTED, FULFILL, GLOAT, FLOURISH, VIGOROUSLY, GLEEFULLY, SEDATED, INTENT, SPECULATED. Use pg. 246-247 as well. Students will define vocab. words in their notebooks. Make predictions about the new selection….Juan Verdades on pg. 250-251;

Wednesday …. Complete P pg. 75 as a review of vocab. Read 248-249 and complete P pg. 76. Discuss story structure…character, plot and setting. Have students play a game of charades using the vocab. words. Break them into groups and only give a few minutes to practice.

Thursday ….Read the story on pgs. 250-265 aloud. Use P pg. 77 as a tool for discussion. Complete remaining practice pages in class. Selection test will be Friday.

Friday....Give time to review materials and give the test.

Language Arts

Monday.....Give time to look over NOUN material, and then give the Noun test.

Tuesday-Friday….Introduce the next unit of study….commas. Over the next several weeks students will be practicing the following comma skills: interjections/introductory words, direct address, items in a series, double adjectives, cities, states, dates in a sentence, appositives, and interrupters. Each day, students will cover a topic and practice inserting commas in their appropriate places.

MONDAY…No school

Tuesday….Finish reading the mummification packet #2 and answer the wkst that goes along with this packet. Complete the hieroglyphics activity and try to guess each other’s names.

Wednesday….Read the last information packet and complete the final info. Wkst. Pass out the ABC’s of Egypt worksheet. The catch is they have to start the fact that they have learned with the correct alphabet letter and it MUST be in sentence form,…..H= Hatshepsut was a female pharaoh in the Old Kingdom. Students may use their outlines to help them fill out the worksheet. This is a 26 pt. assignment that will be DUE ON FRIDAY.

THURSDAY….Explain the Egypt Rap project and requirements. This project will be done in groups of 4 and will be presented on Monday. Students will practice during class today and tomorrow. The Egyptian Unit test will be towards the end of next week.

Monday…No School!

Tuesday-Friday….Students will take the end of the book evaluation. Information will be given about the end of the novel activity. Students will receive folders that include daily activities that will need to be completed by Friday.

Tuesday…..Finish working on the Possessive FUNKY Noun packet ….pgs. 11 & 12. Move to Abstract nouns. A Noun test will be coming soon! Spelling words this week are pulled from our Sisters Grimm Novel. Not only will the students need to spell the vocab. correctly, they must know the definition. The final spelling/definition test will be on Friday. Be sure to study!!!!!!!

Wednesday…..Review for the Noun Unit Test by using the review practice sheets.

Thursday ….Give a few minutes to look over all noun information before giving the Noun Unit Test. Reminder….spelling/definition test tomorrow.

Friday…. Give time to look over spelling words and definitions before giving the spelling/definition test.

Tuesday….Give time to study and then give the 3.3 test. Have students read the Mummification pk. #1 after the test. Assign the “That’s Shocking” wkst for homework.

Wednesday…. Check Tuesday’s hmwk. Complete the 3.4 outline. What’s not finished in class will be hmwk.

Thursday…Check the 3.4 outline and show video #2 for a review.

FridayRead the Mummification pk. #2 and answer questions on wkst. Complete the hieroglyphic activity in packet as well. Play the name game using the Elmo.

Reading

Monday…Read chapter 8 in class. Complete the Word Watcher Wkst. for 8. This is due tomorrow. Begin putting to memory the vocab. words form the beginning of our novel. A BIG vocabulary test is coming up on Thursday. Study!!! It’s 28 points and matching.

Tuesday…Read chapter 9 in small groups. Groups will turn in ONE word watcher sheet for a grade. Reminder of vocab. test on Thursday.

Wednesday…Assign the rest of the book for Friday. Give today as a silent reading day. Vocab. test tomorrow.

Thursday…..Give time to looking over vocab. words. Give the test and collect. Students will use the remaining time to finish reading Sisters Grimm for tomorrow.

Friday… Complete a few end of the book activities and wksts. This will be our end of the novel grade and project. Students will have next week to complete their assignments.
