Scratch Art Self-Portraits
TSW: -observe values in a photograph of him/herself and determine 5 levels of values -compare and contrast styles of portraits through time -gain an appreciation for the work of John Singer Sargent -develop shading skills thru a self portrait value study -demonstrate the use of a variety of lines in a scratch art design -use and define positive and negative shapes in their work MATERIALS: pencil, paper, chalk, photograph, scratch art board, wooden tools

Balsa Foam Subtractive Sculpture
TSW:
-develop problem solving skills in designing and carving his/her initials

-create his/her initials in 1 point perspective over a background which displays an optical illusion

Perspective Landscapes
TSW:

-develop skills in creating the illusion of 3D shapes and space on a 2D surface
-understand the concept of 1 point perspective in relationship to landscape space
-apply 1 point perspective and creative perspective in works using overlapping size, value and placement
-create a surreal, exterior landscape which uses white/black colored pencil for shading
-use shading techniques of hatching, cross hatching, stippling and blending to further enhance the illusion of depth
-learn/recognize pertinent vocabulary

Oaxaca Spider Sculptures
TSW:

-develop problem solving skills in designing a spider and creating an armature

Japanese Oni Masks
TSW:
-learn about the tradition and history of Japanese Oni Masks by research via the library
-gain an appreciation, awareness and understanding of the uses of masks in many cultures throughout time
-understand the sculpture concept of casting to create a stylized mask from his/her face
-demonstrate the use of character within mask making using distortion, exaggeration and symmetry
-exhibit craftsmanship and creativity in completion of mask details/embellishments and his/her choice of finishing
-create a plaster mask cast from his/her face which represents traditional Oni symbolism designed by him/herself
