Art Standards

All students in Middle School art should attain these standards by the time they reach High School level....

Standard 1 Language of Visual Art
-describe and apply knowledge of principles of design in personal artwork and artworks of others
-describe and use elements of art in a variety of artworks
-identify and discriminate between types of shape, colors, lines, textures and space in personal artworks and artworks of others

Standard 2Visual Art History and Culture
-identify how visual arts are used by artists in todays world
-communicate knowledge gained through an integrated study of visual art theme, historical period or event

Standard 3Visual Art Expression
-apply knowledge of a basic art vocabulary through experiences in making original works of art
-demonstrate a basic knowledge of media, techniques and processes in various art mediums
-make original works of art using a variety of materials (media) and techniques (skills) and sources for ideas

Standard 4 Visual Art Appreciation
-demonstrate respect for personal artwork and the artwork of others
-demonstrate a thoughtfulness and care in completion of artworks

-become familiar with the HJ Heinz Company

-recognize line, shape and pattern as key elements of art

-gain an appreciation for the decorative qualities of line design in various artworks

-create an original design while staying within the contest rules set forth by the Heinz Co

-demonstrate craftsmanship in working with colored pencil

-create a surreal, exterior landscape which uses white/black colored pencil for shading

-use shading techniques of hatching, cross hatching, stippling and blending to further enhance the illusion of depth

-create his/her initials (in 1 point perspective) on a mural like background that contains words and symbols that represent the individuality of each student

TSW:

-use observation, memory and imagination in making an original works of art

Japanese Oni Masks

TSW:

-learn about the tradition and history of Japanese Oni Masks by research via the library

-gain an appreciation, awareness and understanding of the uses of masks in many cultures throughout time

-understand the sculpture concept of casting to create a stylized mask from his/her face

-demonstrate the use of character within mask making using distortion, exaggeration and symmetry

-exhibit craftsmanship and creativity in completion of mask details/embellishments and his/her choice of finishing

-create a plaster mask cast from his/her face which represents traditional Oni symbolism designed by him/herself

-analyze examples of Aboriginal art based upon the techniques, styles and themes represented

-apply patterns of dots, lines and shapes, using traditional Aboriginal art techniques, to create an animal dot painting

Gargoyle sculptures- painting and embellishing
TSW:
-review color schemes that were discussed in class
-choose colors that the student feels work well with each other
-paint sculptures neatly with straight lines, 2 or more coats of paint for coverage and no "white spots" showing
-choose mixed media to further embellish each sculpture and enhance overall design
