Information

You will need a three ring binder for math class this year. It should be used only for your Algebra or Geometry materials, no other subjects. Your entire textbook can be viewed online as in years past. The website is my.hrw.com, you will get your username and password the first week of school. If you forget it either ask me again for it or you can use the generic username = pthsstudent and password = summer.

If you are absent and want to keep caught up with your work and we have a worksheet in class, you may always substitute the Practice B worksheet for the section we are studying. This can be accessed through your online text.

There will be math tutoring every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school until 4:00. Students should have rides ready in front of the school at 4:00. No advance sign-up is required-- students may show up any time they need help.

Geometry

Week of May 21 - 25
Monday - Students will finish the quiz on the first 3 sections of Chapter 8. There will be a worksheet for homework.

Tuesday (8.4) - Students will solve problems involving angles of elevation and angles of depression. There will be a worksheet for homework, 8.4 Practice B.

Wednesday - Students will complete an in-class activity. There will not be homework tonight. Notebooks will be collected today, as well as books.

Thursday - Students will complete an in-class activity. There will not be homework tonight.

Friday - 8th Grade Farewell.


Week of May 14 - 18
Monday (8.2) - We will begin our study of trigonometric ratios. Students will find the sine, cosine, and tangent of an acute angle. They will also use trigonometric rations to find side lengths in right triangles. The homework will be 8.2 Practice B.

Tuesday (8.3) - Today students will use trigonometric ratios to find angle measures in right triangles. The homework will be 8.3 Practice A.

Wednesday (8.1-2-3) - We will review sections 1, 2, and 3 in preparation for the quiz on these 3 sections, which will be tomorrow. The homework will be to finish the review work if they do not do so in class. The review work will be page 543 #1-20.

Thursday (8.1-2-3) - Students will take a quiz on the first 3 sections of Chapter 8. There will not be homework for the weekend.

Friday - Gettysburg trip for 8th graders.


Week of May 7 - 11
Monday (11) - We will finish a review sheet for Chapter 11 and go over the answers. Students will also revise their 2 notecards for the chapter and add section 7 material. They will be allowed to use these for the test tomorrow and Wednesday.

Tuesday and Wednesday - There are special programs both of these days which will result in shortened periods for both days. Students will take the Chapter 11 test in 2 parts, with the first side being completed Tuesday and the second side Wednesday. There will not be homework either evening. IF THE PERIODS ARE NOT SHORTENED TUESDAY, STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE THE ENTIRE TEST TUESDAY.

Thursday (8.1) - Students will learn how to find the geometric mean of pairs of numbers. They will use this to find lengths in right triangles. They will also learn how to apply similarity relationships in right triangles. The homework will be pages 521-522 #16-38 even.

Friday (8.1) - Students will work once again on similarity in right triangles. We will work on 8.1 Practice B in class. They should finish it for homework.


Week of April 30 - May 4

Monday (11.6) - Today we will go over properties of segments formed by lines that intersect circles. Students will learn how to find the measures of these special segments. The homework will be pages 796-797 #12-24 even.

Tuesday (11.4-5-6) - Students will review sections 4, 5, and 6 in preparation for tomorrow's quiz. The homework will be to finish the review sheet if they do not do so in class.

Wednesday (11.4-5-6) - Today students will take a quiz on sections 4, 5, and 6 of Chapter 11. There will not be homework tonight.

Thursday (11.7) - Students will learn how to write equations and graph circles in the coordinate plane. They will also be able to use the equation and/or graph to solve problems. The homework will be a worksheet, 11.7 Practice B.

Friday (11) - We will spend the shortened period reviewing Chapter 11. There will not be homework for the weekend.


Week of April 23 - 27
Monday (11.1-2-3) - Students will take a quiz on sections 1, 2, and 3 of Chapter 11. There will not be homework tonight.

Tuesday (11.4) - Today students will learn about inscribed angles in circles and how to find their measures. The homework will be pages 776-777 #8-26 even.

Wednesday (11.5) - Students will find measures of angles formed by lines that intersect circles. We will go over how to find these different measures based on the location of the vertex (inside, outside, or on the circle). The homework will be page 787 #12-30 even.

Thursday - Students will be taking the PSSA Science tests today. Geometry classes will not meet.

Friday - Students will be running the 5K today at Bushy Run. Geometry classes will work on a worksheet reviewing circle terminology in class.


Week of April 16 - 20

Monday (11.3) - Students will find the areas of sectors and segments in circles, as well as arc lengths. The homework will be pages 767-8 #12-14 and #16, 18, 19, 10, 26, 27.

Tuesday and Wednesday - Geometry classes will not meet these days, as students will be taking the PSSA Writing Exams.

Thursday and Friday - Students will be reviewing sections 1, 2, and 3 of Chapter 11 in preparation for the quiz on these 3 sections, which will be Monday. Review work will be assigned Thursday and worked on again in class Friday. They should finish it over the weekend if they do not do so in class.


Week of April 9 - 13
Monday and Tuesday - Spring Break

Wednesday (11.1, 11.2) - Students will be able to identify tangents, secants, and chords. They will also use properties of tangents to solve problems. We will also learn how to apply the properties of arcs and chords in circles, including the measures of arcs and central angles. The homework will be pages 752-753 #12-26 even.

Thursday (11.1, 11.2) - Students will review sections 1 and 2, completing the "Reteach" worksheets for these sections. We will go over the answers together so there will not be homework.

Friday - Career Day


Week of April 2 - 6
Monday (10) - Students will take the Chapter 10 Test today. There will not be homework tonight.

Tuesday (11) - Today we will begin our study of Chapter 11, Circles. Students will work on an organizer for the vocabulary for the chapter. It should be completed in class. They will also receive a "Spring Holiday" graph, which will be due on Thursday after break.

Wednesday - Students will review concepts which will be important in Chapter 11. The in-class assignment will be page 743 #1-21. There will not be a homework assignment for the weekend.

Thursday and Friday - Happy Spring Break!!!


Week of March 26 - 30

Monday (10.7) - Today we will study the formulas for the volumes of pyramids and cones. We will also find volumes of composite figures (figures that are 2 or more simple figures combined). The homework will be pages 710-711 #14-36 even, skip #30.

Tuesday - Students will review sections 4, 5, 6, and 7 in preparation for tomorrow's quiz. The homework will be to finish the review sheet if they do not do so in class.

Wednesday - Students will take a quiz on sections 4 through 7 of Chapter 10. There will not be homework tonight.

Thursday (10.8) - Today students will learn to apply the formulas for the volume and surface area of a sphere. The homework will be page 719 #14-26 even.

Friday - Students will review Chapter 10 in preparation for the test which will be Monday.


Week of March 19 - 23
Monday - Students will complete a March Math Madness activity, dealing with probability and winning percentages. Notebooks are due today also.

Tuesday (10.4) - Today we will apply the formulas for the surface area of a prism and cylinder. Students will learn the terminology: lateral face, lateral edge, right prism, oblique prism, surface area, lateral surface, axis of a cylinder, right cylinder, and oblique cylinder. The homework will be pages 685-6 #14-26 even.

Wednesday (10.5) - Students will learn and apply the formulas for the surface area of a pyramid and cone. They will learn the terminology: regular pyramid, slant height and altitude of a pyramid, axis of a cone, right cone, oblique cone, lateral and surface area of a right cone, slant height of a right cone, altitude of a cone. The homework will be a worksheet, 10.5 Practice B.

Thursday (10.4 & 10.5) - Students will review sections 4 and 5. They will also receive their grades for the 9 weeks, determine if goal was met, and set a goal for the final quarter. The homework will be to finish the worksheet if they do not do so in class.

Friday (10.6) - Today we will begin our study of finding the volumes of 3-dimensional figures. We will learn about the volumes of cylinders and prisms. We will work through examples in class and there will not be homework for the weekend.

Algebra

Week of May 21 - 25
Monday - Students will review sections 6, 7, and 9 in preparation for the quiz, which will be held on Wednesday. They will receive a worksheet, which they should complete if they do not do so in class.

Tuesday - Students will review solving quadratic equations by factoring, taking the square root, and using the quadratic formula. There will be a quiz on this material tomorrow.

Wednesday - Students will take a quiz on sections 6, 7, and 9 of Chapter 9. Notebooks will also be collected today, as well as books. There will not be homework tonight.

Thursday - Students will complete an in-class activity. There will not be homework tonight.

Friday - 8th Grade Farewell.


Week of May 14 - 18
Monday (9.6 & 9.7) - Students will practice solving quadratic equations by factoring and using square roots. The homework will be a worksheet to practice both factoring types.

Tuesday (9.9) - Today we will begin using the quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations. We will work through examples for practice in class. The homework will be 9.9 Practice B.

Wednesday (9.9) - We will continue practicing the quadratic formula. There will be a worksheet for practice for homework.

Thursday - We will review different ways to solve quadratic equations that we have learned so far. There will be a quiz next week. There will not be homework for the weekend.

Friday - Gettysburg trip for 8th graders. 7th graders will be doing a practice activity.


Week of May 7 - 11
Monday (8) - Students will take the test on Chapter 8. There will not be homework tonight.

Tuesday - Students will begin studying Chapter 9. They will work on test corrections, then begin 9.6 Review for Mastery.

Wednesday (9.6) - Students will continue 9.6, working on 9.6 Practice A for additional practice.

Thursday (9.6) - Students will use what they learned in Chapter 8 about factoring to solve quadratic equations. They will be able to determine solutions if the equation is already factored as well as factor then solve the equations. The homework will be page 633 #18-28 even.

Friday (9.7) - Students will learn how to simplify radicals. They will use this to find square roots in simplified radical form so they will not need a calculator to get decimal answers for numbers that are not perfect squares. We will then learn how to solve quadratic equations by using square roots. There will not be homework for the weekend.

Week of April 30 - May 4


Monday (8.3-4-5) - Students will review 3 types of factoring (leading coefficient = 1, leading coefficient > 1, and difference of perfect squares) in preparation for the quiz, which will be tomorrow. There will be a review sheet, which students should complete if they do not do so in class.

Tuesday (8.3-4-5) - Today students will take a quiz on sections 3, 4, and 5 of Chapter 8. There will not be homework tonight.

Wednesday (8.6) - Students will learn how to choose from the different factoring methods we have learned. We will also be combining methods of factoring. There will be a worksheet for homework, 8.6 Practice B.

Thursday and Friday (Chapter 8) - Students will review Chapter 8 in preparation for the Chapter 8 Test, which will be Monday. There will be a review sheet, which we will work on in class. They should finish it for homework to practice for the test.


Week of April 23 - 37
Monday (8.4) - Students will continue practicing factoring trinomials with leading coefficients other than 1. We will work together through several more problems to practice the procedure. There will be a worksheet for homework.

Tuesday (8.4) - Students will practice factoring quadratic equations with leading coefficients. There will be an in-class activity, so if they finish the problems there will not be homework.

Wednesday (8.5) - Students will learn how to factor the difference of two perfect squares. We will then mix the factoring types from sections 3, 4, and 5 for practice. The homework will be page 562 #8-13 and #21-26.

Thursday (8.3-4-5) - Students will review sections 3, 4, and 5 of Chapter 8 in preparation for the quiz on these 3 sections, which will be held on Tuesday. There will be a review sheet, which they should complete if they do not do so in class.

Friday - Students will participate in the 5K at Bushy Run. If classes meet, we will simply review again for the quiz on Monday. There will not be new learning or homework.

Week of April 16 - 20

Monday (8.3) - Students will factor quadratic trinomials with the leading coefficient of 1. Basically, they will be figuring out what they would need to FOIL to get back to the original trinomial. The homework will be page 544 #18-30 even.

Tuesday (8.3) - Students will practice factoring the same type of trinomials we did yesterday. They will complete a worksheet in class, 8.3 Practice B, so they should not have homework.

Wednesday (8.2 & 8.3) - Students will review sections 2 and 3 today, mixing the two types of factoring we have done so far. There will be a review sheet, which they should finish for homework if they do not do so in class.
Thursday (8.1-2-3) - Students will take a quiz on the first 3 sections of Chapter 8. There will not be homework tonight.

Friday (8.4) - Today students will learn how to factor trinomials with a leading coefficient other than 1. There is a procedure which they will follow. It will be provided on a handout for them to use. There will not be homework tonight.

Week of April 9 - 13
Monday and Tuesday - Spring Break

Wednesday (8.1) - Today we will review prime factorization and finding the greatest common factor of 2 or more numbers. We will then apply this knowledge to learn how to find the GCF of monomials. The homework will be 8.1 Practice B.

Thursday (8.2) - Students will learn how to factor polynomials by using the greatest common factor. We will practice in class; the assignment will be 8.2 Practice A.

Friday - Career Day

Week of April 2 - 6
Monday (7) - Students will take the Chapter 7 Test today. There will not be homework tonight.

Tuesday (7) - Students will have the opportunity to correct mistakes they made on yesterday's test. This will serve as the "re-test" for this chapter. Students will earn partial credit back for the problems they complete correctly. This assignment is due at the end of the period; it is not homework. They will receive a "Spring Holiday" graph which will be due on Thursday after break.

Wednesday (8) - Students will complete an assignment reviewing concepts which will be important for Chapter 8. The assignment is page 521 #1-29. It should be completed in class, so there is not homework for the break.

Thursday and Friday - Happy Spring Break!


Week of March 26 - 30
Monday (7.8) - We will spend another day multiplying, with a focus on multiplying binomials. The homework will be page 505 #21-36 multiples of 3 and page 505 #21-36 (3n).

Tuesday (7.5, 7.6, 7.7, 7.8) - Students will review sections 5, 6, 7, and 8 of Chapter 7 in preparation for the quiz, which will be tomorrow. The homework will be to finish the review sheet if they do not do so in class.

Wednesday - Today students will take a quiz on sections 5, 6, 7, and 8 of Chapter 7. There will not be homework tonight.

Thursday - We will begin our review of Chapter 7 in preparation for Monday's test. Today's focus will be on the first 4 sections of the chapter. The content will be the properties of exponents. There will be a review sheet for the students to complete, part of which will be the homework.

Friday - We will continue the Chapter 7 review. Today's work will focus on the last 4 sections of the chapter.


Week of March 19 - 23
Monday - Students will complete an activity dealing with probability and percentages based on March Math Madness. Notebooks will also be due today.

Tuesday (7.5) - Today students will learn the vocabulary associated with polynomial classification, both by degree and by number of terms. We will write polynomials in standard form and evaluate polynomial expressions. There will not be a homework assignment.

Wednesday (7.6) - Students will learn how to add and subtract polynomials by combining like terms. We will also review the terminology from section 5. The homework will be page 479-480 #27-57(3n).

Thursday (7.6) - Students will go over their grades for the quarter; we will review if they made their goal and set a goal for the final quarter. The assignment will be page 487 #1-32, most of which should be completed in class.

Friday (7.7) - Today we will go over how to multiply polynomials. We have already learned how to multiply monomials, so most of our discussion will focus on multiplying different polynomials by applying the distributive property or using the FOIL method for multiplying binomials. There will not be a homework assignment for the weekend.
