SPELLING: TSW...write "Words from Mythology" with 100% accuracy. Today, the students will take the pretest for "Words from Mythology," These words can be found on Practice page 179.
HOMEWORK: Students are to complete Practice page 181-182 for tomorrow.
GRAMMAR: TSW...identify strong leads and endings in a persuasive piece. We will begin class today by discussing the answers to Reteach 95 and Practice 96 assigned for homework last Friday. Next, we will read and discuss "Composition: Leads and Endings," TB Pgs 456-457. We will only discuss exercises from page 457, but we will also discuss the answers to Reteach 97. With any remaining class time, students can begin working on Sections A through E from the Unit 6 Review found on TB Pgs 484-485. This is to be completed for homework and will BE GRADED!
HOMEWORK: Complete Sections A through E from Unit 6 Review begun in class today. This is a GRADED HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT!
Tuesday, May 15th
SPELLING: TSW...identify the meanings of the "Words from Mythology." Today we will go over the homework from past night, Practice pages 181-182. We will do both pages at the same time. As the students give the word in the proper alphabetical order (pg 181), they will identify the correct meaning (pg 182). They will then orally spell the word.
HOMEWORK: Students will complete a crossword puzzle for the "Words from Mythology."
GRAMMAR: TSW...complete exercises from Unit 6 with 100% accuracy. Today in class, we will go over Sections A through E from the Unit 6 Review begun yesterday in class and assigned for homework last night. When this is completed, the assignment is to be COLLECTED AND GRADED. Students may use the remainder of the class to complete Sections F through J from the Unit 6 Review, TB Pgs 486-487. This is to be completed for homework and will BE GRADED!

Wednesday, May 16th
SPELLING: TSW...complete a crossword puzzle using "Words from Mythology." Today, we will go over the "Words from Mythology" crossword puzzle assigned for homework last night. As the correct answer is given, students will orally spell the word. HOMEWORK: Tonight's homework is based on the test "Greek Suffixes." If students had a score of 80% or higher, 20 or more words correct, they only need to study this week's words for tomorrow's final test. This assignment is due for Friday, although students can turn it in tomorrow if they wish.
GRAMMAR: TSW...complete exercises from Unit 6 with 100% accuracy. Today in class, we will go over Sections F through J from the Unit 6 Review found on TB Pgs 486-487. When we are finished, this will be collected and graded. Any remaining time will be used to prepare for tomorrow's Unit 6 Test.

Thursday, May 17th
SPELLING: There will be no Spelling today due to the Unit 6 Grammar Test.
GRAMMAR: TSW...complete exercises from Unit 6 with 70% accuracy. Students will be taking the Unit 6 Grammar Test today. We will begin with the "Listening Skills" section first. Students will then complete the Unit 6 Test on their own. If all students finish and there is enough time, we will go over the test before it is COLLECTED AND GRADED!

Friday, May 18th
SPELLING: TSW...write "Words from Mythology" with 80% accuracy. Students toddy will take the final test for "Words from Mythology." These words can be found on Practice page 179. Students are required to write out all 25 words.
HOMEWORK: Technically nothing. However the students could study for Monday's Pretest on "Words From Around the World." These words can be found on Practice page 185.

Reading – Week of May 14-18
Monday, May 14th
TSW...participate in a Pair-Share activity for "On My Honor." ...define the words nonchalance, tourist, propelled, and supplication. ......complete an activity from their Vocabulary Contract. Before class begins, have the following directions on the board: "Sketch your answer to this question: Where would Joel most like to be at this point in the story?" Allow students time to respond to this exercise at the beginning of class. When everyone has finished, students will use a Pair-Share cooperative learning model to share their sketches. Students will first share their sketch with a partner, explaining what they drew. Next, they will share the drawings with another group of two, forming the Square. After they have shared as a Square, the Square will select one sketch to share with the class. The student who drew the sketch cannot be the person who shares for the Square. With the remaining class time, have students define the words nonchalance, tourist, propelled, and supplication found on their Vocabulary Worksheet.
HOMEWORK: Continue to work on your activities for your Vocabulary Contract.
Tuesday, May 15th
TSW...complete a SOPQ activity for Chapters 7 & 8 from "On My Honor." ...define the terms nonchalance, tourist, propelled, supplication as the words are used in the story. Students today are to read Chapter 7 and 8 from "On My Honor." (Students have the option of reading these pages independently, with a partner, or with the teacher.) When finished, students are to work independently to complete the SOPQ exercise. If students are waiting for the class to finish, they may begin working on the vocabulary words for this chapter: nonchalance, tourist, propelled, supplication.
HOMEWORK: Continue to work on activities for your Vocabulary Contract.
Wednesday, May 16th
TSW...complete a SOPQ activity for Chapters 7 & 8. ...evaluate Joel's story. Today, students are to move into groups of 3/4 students to discuss the SOPQ activity. However, before they start this discussion, have students respond to the following: "Evaluate whether Joel's story was believable." Their response to this should be written in their journals. When all students have completed this, students may begin discussing their SOPQ responses and their response to the Journal Writing. With any remaining class time, students may work on the vocabulary words for this chapter (nonchalance, tourist, propelled, supplication) or an activity from their Vocabulary Contract.
HOMEWORK: Continue to work on activities for your Vocabulary Contract.
Thursday, May 17th
TSW...complete a SOPQ activity for Chapters 9 & 10. ...define the words circular, reverently, and dispel as used in this book. ...complete a RAFT exercise. Today, students will read Chapters 9 & 10 from "On My Honor." (Students have the option of reading these pages independently, with a partner, or with the teacher.) When finished reading, students are to work independently to complete the SOPQ exercise. While waiting for the entire class to finish, student may work on the vocabulary words for this chapter: circular, reverently, and dispel. When all students have finished the SOPQ exercise, have students share their responses in their groups. Prior to the end of the period, introduce the RAFT activity. Distribute the sheet that explains the RAFT exercise, and the rubrics that will be used to evaluate the exercise.
HOMEWORK: Complete the RAFT activity for homework.
Friday, May 18th
TSW...present their RAFT exercise to their group. ...write a reflection as Joel as their friend. In their groups, students will present the RAFT activity that they did last night. Afterwards, these will be collected for evaluation. Next, students will write a response in their journals to the following questions: "Would you trust Joel to be your friend? Why or why not?" When all students appear to be finished, ask if any students wishes to share their response. Call on all who want to respond. With the remaining class time, students are to work on the vocabulary words for these chapters (circular, reverently, and dispel) or work on an activity from their Vocabulary Contract.

GRAMMAR TSW...identify interjections and learn how to use them in sentences. ...identify the correct punctuation in introductory prepositional phrases and interjections. We will begin class today by reading and discussing "Interjections," TB Pgs 436-437. As part of the discussion, we will orally discuss exercises 1-10. We will also note the punctuation used at the end of these phrases and discuss their use. This ties in with the next lesson we will read and discuss today, "Punctuating Introductory Prepositional Phrases and Interjections," TB Pgs 440-441. If time permits, we will discuss all exercises on these pages.
HOMEWORK: Students are to complete Reteach 92 and Extend 92 for tomorrow.
Tuesday, May 8th
SPELLING TSW...identify the Greek suffixes in this week's words. Today in class, we will go over Practice page 175. As the correct response is given, students are to orally spell the words. HOMEWORK: Students are to complete a crossword puzzle using the words with Greek Suffixes. This assignment is due tomorrow.
GRAMMAR TSW...complete exercises from TB Pgs 428-441 with 70% accuracy. We will begin class today by going over last night's homework, Reteach 92 and Extend 92. Students will then have the remainder of the period to complete the "Mixed Review" exercises from TB Pgs 442-443. This assignment is not due until tomorrow and WILL BE GRADED!
HOMEWORK: Complete the "Mixed Review" exercises from TB Pgs 442-443 begun in class today. Remember, this is a GRADED ASSIGNMENT!
Wednesday, May 9th
SPELLING TSW...use the meanings of words with Greek suffixes to accurately complete a crossword puzzle. Today, we will go over the crossword puzzle assigned yesterday. As the correct resonse is given, students should spell the words.
HOMEWORK: Tonight's homework is based on the test "Absorbed Prefixes." If students had a score of 80% or higher, 20 or more words correct, they only need to study this week's words for tomorrow's final test. If students have a score of 76% or less, 19 or less words correct, on that test, they need to write THIS WEEK'S WORDS 5 times each. That is all 25 words. This assignment is due for Friday, although students can turn it in tomorrow if they wish.
GRAMMAR TSW...complete exercises from TB Pgs 428-441 with 100% accuracy. Today in class, we will be discussing the students' responses to the "Mixed Review" exercises on TB Pgs 442-443. When finished, these exercises will be COLLECTED AND GRADED. Any remaining class time will be used to prepare for tomorrow's quiz on TB Pgs 428-443.

SPELLING TSW...spell words containing Greek suffixes with 80% accuracy. Today is the final test for words with "Greek Suffixes." These words can be found on page 173. HOMEWORK: Technically, nothing. However, students could study for the "Words from Mythology" pretest which will be given on Monday. These words can be found on page 179.
GRAMMAR TSW...find out another way to gather ideas and content for their writing by learning how to perform online searches. ...identify words with positive and negative connotations and learn how to select words to improve their writing. If we went over the quiz yesterday, we will follow the following plans. If not, we will begin class by going over the quiz and only do the first part of today's lesson. We will begin class today by reading and discussing "On-Line Searches," TB Pgs 452-453. We will discuss all ten exercises orally in class. We will also read and discuss "Vocabulary: Word Choice," TB Pgs 454-455, today. If time permits, we will discuss all exercises orally.

TSW...participate in a Reciprocal Teaching Process for Chapters 1 and 2 of "On My Honor." ...properly define words from Chapters 1 and 2 of "On My Honor." Today in class, we will begin by discussing the vocabulary words assigned for homework last night. Next, students will be moved into groups of 3/4 to participate in a Reciprocal Teaching Process using their responses to their SOPQ Response Card. Before students leave today, they will complete an "Exit Slip" responding to the following prompt: "If your parents told you not to go somewhere, would you go anyway? Why or why not?"
Tuesday, May 8th
TSW...decide on the activities they will use to complete their "Vocabulary Contract". ...read Chapters 3 and 4 on "On My Honor" and complete an SOPQ activity. ...define the words gawk, immersing, realigned, and agitated. At the start of class today, I will introduce the "Vocabulary Contract." The points to emphasize is that the students need to pick out activities that total 100 points and the contract must be fulfilled by the day of the book test. Students are now to read Chapter 3 and 4 of "On My Honor." (Students have the option of reading these pages independently, with a partner, or with me.) When finished, students are to independently complete the SOPQ activity.
HOMEWORK: Decide on the activities to fulfill your Vocabulary Contract. These will be turned into Mr. Fontana tomorrow. If necessary, complete the SOPQ activity in your Composition Book. Define the words gawk, immersing, realigned, and agitated on your vocabulary worksheet.
Wednesday, May 9th
TSW...decide on the activities they will use to complete their "Vocabulary Contract". ...properly define the words from Chapter 3 and 4 of "On My Honor." ...participate in a Reciprocal Teaching Method activity for Chapters 3 and 4 of "On My Honor." At the start of class today, i will collect from students their Vocabulary Contracts. (This is only to ensure that they have activities that total 100 points. These are the activities they are committed to. There will be no changing.) We will then discuss the vocabulary words assigned last night for homework to ensure that the students have the correct definitions of the words. Students will then move into small groups (3/4 students) to complete a Reciprocal Teaching Activity. With the remaining class time, we will do a "Think-Pair-Share" activity. Students should think about the question "What would I do at this point in the story?" After a couple of minutes, students will share their thoughts with the person they are sitting next to so that answers may be discussed. I will then ask for volunteers to share their answers with the class.
HOMEWORK: Work on one or more of your Vocabulary Contract activities.

TSW...respond to a question about honesty. ....read Chapters 5 and 6 of "On My Honor" and complete an SOPQ activity. ...define the terms deceptively, barrage, inverted, shear, and reverberated. To begin class today, have the following prompt written on the board: Explain how not telling someone all of the facts may be dishonest. Give students an opportunity to respond to this prompt in their composition books/journal. When it appears that everyone is done, ask if anyone wishes to share their response. When you are finished with this, remind students of the story of Pinocchio,that his nose grew anytime he told a lie. Ask students to identify ways that they know when someone is lying. (Not making eye contact, fidgeting, changing their stories, too much detail, etc.) When done, students are to read Chapters 5 and 6 of "On My Honor". (Students have the option of reading these pages independently, with a partner, or with the teacher.)
HOMEWORK: If students had enough time to finish the reading of Chapter 5 and 6, then they can complete the SOPQ activity for these chapters in their composition books. If not, then this assignment cannot be given. Either way, the students should be able to define the terms deceptively, barrage, inverted, shear, and reverberated on their vocabulary worksheet.

We will start class today by discussing the vocabulary words for Chapter 5 and 6 assigned for homework last night. Next depending on what occurred in yesterday class, one of two activities will take place. If necessary, students will complete the reading of Chapters 5 and 6 from "On My Honor." When finished students will need to complete the SOPQ activity for these chapters in their composition books. They are then to move into small groups to complete the Reciprocal Teaching Method exercise. If students completed the reading yesterday, they should move directly into the Reciprocal Teaching Method exercise. When this is completed students should complete the following "Exit Slip" activity: Write one-word summaries for Joel's feeling at this point in the book and explain why you chose that word. If their is time at the end of the period, students may work on a Vocabulary Contract activity.

GRAMMAR: TSW...identify prepositional phrases used as adjectives and as adverbs. We will begin class today by going over Extend 86 and Practice 87 assigned for homework last night. We will then cover the lessons "Prepositional Phrases as Adjectives," TB Pgs 432-433, and "Prepositional Phrases as Adverbs," TB Pgs 434-435. We will orally discuss exercises 1-15 for both lessons.

Thursday, May 3rd
SPELLING: TSW...complete a crossword puzzle using words with absorbed prefixes. Today in class, we will be going over the "Absorbed Prefixes" crossword puzzle assigned for homework last night. As the correct answer is given, students are to orally spell the words. Afterwards, I will return the students"Greek and Latin Prefixes" test.
HOMEWORK: Study for the test for those who have to take it.
GRAMMAR: TSW...combine sentences using prepositional phrases. We will start class today by going over Reteach 88 and Practice 89 assigned for homework last night. We will then cover the lesson "Combining Sentences: Prepositional Phrases," TB Pgs 438-439. We will orally discuss exercises 1-15 in class.

TSW...complete exercises from Unit 5 with 70% accuracy. Today, the students will be taking the Unit 5 Reading test. The test begins with a Listening skills section based on the article "Inventing Paper." The story to be read can be found on page 89 of the"PSSA Format Assessment" booklet. After the students have completed these questions, the students are to complete the test on their own. When students are finished, they should read an independent reading book. If all students finish prior to the end of class, go over the test before it is COLLECTED AND GRADED.

TSW...respond to the question: Is honesty always the best policy? ...discuss the fable "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." Have the following question written on the board: "Is honesty always the best policy?" Have students write out a response to this question. Ask if any student would like to share their response. Next read the fable "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" to the class. When finished, discuss the following questions: 1. What was the boy's motive for crying wolf? 2. What was the community's reaction at first when the boy cried wolf? 3. How did the boy's motives and the townspeople's reactions change? Next, display the Concept Map for honesty to discuss the word honesty. Students are to copy the information on a index card. This will eventually be placed in the Four Pocket Book after it is made.

TSW...construct a four pocket booklet to stay organized. ...preview the book "On My Honor." ...understand the Reciprocal Teaching Process. We will start class today by making a Four Pocket Book. Demonstrate how this is done for the students as they make their books. Next, distribute the classroom copies of "On My Honor." Model how to preview the book. As the students to look at the title and cover illustration. Have students make a prediction about what the book will be about. Now, have students read the back cover and discuss how their predictions change. Ask students to respond to the question that ends the description: "how can he (Joel) face their parents and the terrible truth?" Finally today, introduce and demonstrate the Reciprocal Teaching Process. This will be the technique used to discuss the novel.

PROCESS WRITING: TSW...use their flow charts to compose the first draft of their explanatory essay. I will check to make sure that students have their flow charts completed for their explanatory essay. We will then read and discuss "Draft" from TB Pgs 218-219 to see how they are to use their drafts to create a first draft. Students will then work with a partner and use "Writing Transparency 23" to create an explanatory essay. We will share some of these with the class.
PROCESS WRITING HOMEWORK: Students are to use their flow charts to compose the first draft of their explanatory essay. Students should write on every other line to allow for the editing process, which will occur over the next few days. (Just a reminder, the writing of the first draft is to allow the free flowing of ideas. We do not worry about mechanics. We do not worry about elaboration. All of this will occur as we revise over the next few days.)

PROCESS WRITING: TSW...exchange drafts with their peers and give each other feedback about their explanatory article. Today is the day for peer conferencing about the students' explanatory essay. After reviewing the guidelines for peer conferencing found on TB Pg 222 or "Writing Transparency 25," we will begin the conferencing process. (The explanatory essay rubrics should be used to guide the conference.) I will assign the first peer that students must work with. Students will conference a second time with a peer of their choosing.
PROCESS WRITING HOMEWORK: Now is the time for students to get input from home. Students should ask their parents or an older sibling to advise them on their explanatory essay. They should share with you the rubrics that will be used to evaluate their work. (At this time, we are still not focusing on mechanics, but you could give input their as well.) Students should then take the feedback they received in school and at home to revise their essays.

PROCESS WRITING: TSW...proofread their work for errors in spelling, grammar, or for usage. Today in class, we will work on proofreading an explanatory essay. When we are finished, students will be given the remainder of class time to begin proofreading their essay.

Students will be asked to decide how they will present the information: by paragraphs or point by point. I will then demonstrate to students how to move from their information gathering method to the writing of the first draft. As the first draft is written, students should skip or double-space. This will allow for editing and revising.

Reading – Week of Nov 7-11
Monday, November 7th
TSW...use context clues to define the words for this week's selection. Today, we will use part of the period to take a district wide survey in the B-17 computer lab. Back in the classroom, students will be divided into eight groups. In these groups, students will use contect clues from "The Last Great Race on Earth" to define a word for this week's selection. They will complete a word chart that will be presented to the class. As each word is presented, students are to take notes using vocabulary squares.
HOMEWORK: Preview "The Great Serum Race," TB Pgs 222-235. Using the illustrations, students are to write what they feel the story will entail.

TSW...read this week's selection and construct a sequence chart that will be used to summarize the story. To introduce the activity of constructing a sequence chart, I will begin class today by completing the "Reread for Comprehension" found on pages 221A-B of the TM. Afterwards, we will use the Idea Wave to hear students prediction about the selection, "The Great Serum Race." We will then begin to orally read "The Great Serum Race," TB Pgs 222-235. As we read, we will begin to complete the sequence chart on Practice page 68.

Thursday, November 10th
TSW...participate in literature circles to discuss the selection. ...use the TEXXXI format to write a summary of the selection. Students will be moved into literature circles to discuss their sequence charts for "The Great Serum Race." Students will then discuss questions for the selection in these circles. Upon completion, I will review the TEXXXI format with the students. Students will use this format to write a summary of the selection.

Friday, November 11th
TSW...present their summaries of "The Great Serum Race." ...identify the features of haiku poetry including symbolism and metaphor. Moving back into their literature circles from yesterday, students will share their summaries for "The Great Serum Race." Students will select the best one from their group to be presented to the entire class. With the remaining class time, I will do the haiku poetry lesson found on pages 238-239 of the student textbook and the teacher's manual.

TSW...list idioms found in this week's selection. At the start of class, I will introduce idioms to the students using 217D from the Unit 2 Teacher's Manual. Together in class we will complete Practice page 164. Students will then share their preview notes for "Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter." We will then begin to read the selection. Students will list idioms they find in the story. (They are to not only list the idiom, but where it is found in the selection.)
