TISSUE BOX COVERS will be our next project. Students wishing to purchase a FAT QUARTER of fabric for the project may do so. Fabrics will be provided, but many students prefer their own special selection.

The JA program is developed with a emphasis on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness. JA also emphasizes mathematics, reading, and writing skills. Students will explore career interests and education.

This week students will participate in the Junior Achievement program taught by volunteers in our community.
8th Grade CRAFTS
Students will complete their crochet rectangle. Rectangles will be slip-stitched together to form a lap quilt.
Please remember to have supplies for the Baggie Wreath that we will begin on Monday, November 21. Approximately 200 plus baggies and a wire hanger are needed. Giant Eagle sells a 300 count Fold and Close sandwich bags for $2.99.

We are continuing drawstring bag construction. Students will attach the pocket to bag, divide the pocket, and join the two bag body pieces together.
Students will be able to demonstrate correct threading and control of the sewing machine.
Students will use the iron for pressing bag pieces throughout construction.
Construction steps will be graded throughout the week and marked on the grade sheet.
8th Grade Crafts

Students will wind bobbins and thread machines. Students are to store their bobbin in the ziplock bag. Bobbins will be returned when the project is complete.
Students will stitch a rolled hem in their pocket and attach pocket to one bag body.

This week students will discuss the tools used in sewing. The students will complete a worksheet and a puzzle on this information.
Students will measure and draw the pattern symbols used in the construction of a drawstring bag. The students will demonstrate the use of graph paper and a ruler. After practicing on paper, the student will mark pattern symbols on the wrong side of each pattern piece.
Students will be given a grade sheet that is to be kept in their sewing bag. This grade sheet is not to leave the room until the project is completed.
CRAFTS 8THGRADE
Monday and Tuesday we will finish construction of the drink wrap.
Wednesday thur Friday we will work on the construction of a “tissue box cover”. Students may purchase 1 Fat Quarter of fabric for the project. Free fat quarters are available to the class.

Students will begin unit on sewing.
Students will understand the location and the function of the sewing machine parts.
Students will be demonstrating the use of the ruler as they measure and draw the pattern markings on graph paper.
Students will be working with fractions and whole numbers.
8th Grade “CRAFTS”
Students have demonstrated their ability to sew a four hole and a two hole button. Find those loose and missing buttons and put your 8th grader to work.
We are now going to begin various embroidery stitches that will be used throughout the semester. These will include the blanket stitch, running stitch, outline stitch and any special requests.
Students will apply these newly learned skills to prepare a “drink wrap”.

Students will complete personal banners and present them to the class.
Thursday
We will discuss the sewing project for the class and review the order forms. Forms are to be signed and returned to class on Friday, September 9. 10pts will be given for form signed and returned. This will count as a homework assignment.

We will visit the Sewing Room 208 and select sewing machines. Students will be given a copy of the sewing machine parts. Students will draw and label the machine parts. It is very important to identify the parts of the machine and the function of each part for SAFETY.
This drawing will be graded.

Students will complete sewing a two hole and a four hole button. Button sheet will be turned in for grade.
Wednesday
Students will practice the blanket stitch along the edge of a fleece square.

Welcome back! I hope you are excited to begin "FCS". I have many exciting activities planned.
This week classes will be very flexible to adjust to any changes that may occur.
Students will receive a handout explaining rules and requirements for class. We will discuss fire and weather drill procedures for room 110 and room 208. This paper is to be signed by the student and the parent. Signed papers are to be RETURNED on Wednesday, August 31, 2011.
**Students will need to return signed paper on Day 3 of this week.

Students will take a look in the mirror and begin to chart a course for the best school year ever.

* Students are to have a large paper shopping or grocery bag for class. Be sure the book which you want to cover fits inside the bag with a few inches to spare. Wallpaper, heavy wrapping paper, brown craft paper and freezer paper may be used for the book cover. Do not forget, the newspaper works also.
