STUDY SKILLS/TEST-TAKING SKILLS SUGGESTIONS

TEST-TAKING STRATEGIES

Questions To Ask Yourself:

1.Are you stuck in cycle of negative thinking?

2.Who has control over your choices?

3.Are you willing to learn new habits?

4.Are you willing to make changes?

Then lets get started!!

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING!! If you are stuck in a cycle of negative thinking-give it up NOW!! Believe in yourself, tell yourself I CAN, do your BEST, don’t be AFRAID.

1.Be Prepared for your tests. This means you can NOT wait until the night before a test to study! If you are prepared your anxiety level should be low!!.

When you know when you are having a test try this strategy:

Allow the night before the test to REVIEW all the material you will be tested on. This is ONLY A REVIEW. IN OTHER WORDS THIS TIME IS FOR YOU TO GO OVER EVERYTHING THAT WILL BE ON THE TEST.

During the days prior to the REVIEW DAY divide the material up and each evening devote a set amount of time to reviewing just that material. You may need 20 minutes to 45 minutes to do this.

Think of it like this: If you have a hobby and you practice, you know you will do well. If you are prepared for a test by studying or practicing you will be able to relax and do your best.

Studies have shown that most people remember information better when they review and repeat the information in several short sessions at a time

2.REMEMBER: Your performance on a test is only one small part of who you are. It does NOT define you as a failure or loser. It is also one part of your grade NOT the entire grade!

3. BE A GOOD LISTENER-keep your hands and feet still, look at thespeaker, and think about what you hear being said. Jot down any questions you may have and ask them at the end of the lecture. If you are too shy to ask in front of your classmates, ask your questions at the end of class.

4.When taking a test: a.Watch the Time

b.Pace yourself. If you aren’t sure of an answer, skip the question and come back to it-there may be information in another question that may help you figure out the answer you skipped.

YOU CAN ANSWER THE EASY QUESTIONS FIRST, THEN PROCEED WITH THE MORE DIFFICULT ONES. This helps build confidence!

YOU CAN JUST LOOK AT ONE QUESTION AT A TIME BY COVERING THE OTHER QUESTIONS, SO THAT YOU DON’T BEGIN TO PANIC AND ONLY FOCUS ON WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW, RATHER THAN WHAT YOU DO KNOW!!

c. Think positively-You CAN DO WELL!!

d. Read each question twice-why so you don’t just assume you know the answer, plus it forces you to be thorough in your reading.

e. Check your work!! Check for omissions, missed words, or stray marks. READ don’t just GLANCE your answers over.

TRUE AND FALSE TESTS

TIP #1

Read the statement slowly and carefully. If any part of the statement is false the entire statement will be false.

TIP #2

Beware of Sway Words. These words can sway a statement from true to false. These words include:all, every, always, only and because

TIP #3

True Clue words indicates that the answer is TRUE. These words include:

Usually and Generally

TIP #4

STICK WITH YOUR FIRST ANSWER UNLESS YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE IT IS WRONG. Usually a first hunch is correct.

TIP #5

Check your answer by rereading the statement to yourself with your chosen answer as part of the statement. For example: True or False Jupiter is the smallest planet in our solar system. ANSWER :FALSE Check it by : No Jupiter is not the smallest planet in the solar system.

MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST QUESTIONS

A multiple choice item consists of two parts:

1.a question or incomplete statement

2.possible answer choices.

Carefully READboth the question and the possible choices. The incorrect choices are known as distractors and are designed to make you think harder.

Once you read the question or statement try to answer or complete the statement before looking at the possible choices. If you are able to do this you will be able to eliminate the distractors.

If you are unable to do this, look at the choices and1.Eliminate the ones that are obviously wrong.2. Eliminate the answers that are grammatically incorrect 3. Eliminate the answers that are two vague

When two of your choices are exactly opposite one of those choices is usually the correct answer.

Use the information from the statements and questions being asked on a multiple choice test to help you answer other questions.

Remember REVIEW YOUR ANSWER CHOICES.

ESSAY TESTS

When an essay test question asks you to:

1.compare-describe similarities

2.contrast –describe differences

3.explain-tell or give reasons for

4.describe-characterize something or someone

5.state-discuss a main point or idea

6.prove-give arguments with supporting details

7.diagram-use a chart, graph, picture with labels

8.summarize-give main ideas or points without details

Remember to read the essay question completely and budget your time.

THE ABOVE 8 WORDS ARE A GREAT LIST TO MEMORIZE....YOU WILL ALWAYS KNOW WHAT IS EXPECTED IN AN ESSAY QUESTION PLUS YOU ARE PRACTICING SOME NEWLY GAINED SKILLS!!!

ANNOUNCING....THE FUTURE

8TH Students and Parents are invited to attend the Schedule Night Meeting at PTHS on January 21, 2010 at 7:00PM.

We will have reviewed the Program of Studies Booklet by that time and reviewed them with all 8th graders. You are asked to bring the Booklet to the meeting that night.
Following the group meeting (overview), you will be able to visit the various departments and the course offerings available for next school year. You may ask your questions directly to that department, and be better able to make the decisions that are "right" for your child.

SIMPLE OR COMPLEX?

One of the simplest strategies to use when desiring to become more motivated is: Changing the way a person thinks; change negative thinking to positive thinking, and it will allow a person to set goals, provide hope, and show that effort does have a pay-off. Whether it's an increase in salary a promotion or good grades, the power of positive thinking does help.

To our children, this may seem a complex matter, because how does changing the way a child thinks help him/her in school?
First, a person needs to examine how or if he/she is stuck in a negative cycle of thinking.
Second, the person should examine what he/she has control over and what he/she does not have control over. This allows the person to work and concentrate on things that he/she can control and bring those things to the "front burner" so to speak. The things that he/she has little or no control over should be moved to the "back burner".

In other words what the person can control makes it possible for the person to change.

Simple? Yes, because it is easy to say what needs to be done.
Complex? Most definitely, because it is hard work to get rid of old habits (negative thinking) an adopt and keep new habits (positive thinking).

Multiple Intelligences

A child's/adolescent's self-esteem is largely based on the belief that all individuals are talented and valued in some area of their intellectual person(Garner 1983). Yes, this information is from 1983, but it holds true today, and as we learn more about the brain we find that it is true that there are many types of intelligence.
A child or adolescent may have: 1. a unique understanding of self or be 2. people smart, and be able to interact and understand others. What about the child who is 3. musical or the adolescent who is 4. artistic? How about the friend we have who is 5. mathematical or the one who is 6. quite verbal? Of course, we can't forget the 7. athlete or the brother or sister we have is 8. Nature Smart and tries to be sure that we learn to live in harmony with the environment. Each intelligence is important!!
What we must do to assist our children and help motivate them further is: have them look at their strongest intelligences to the least strongest. We should teach them to celebrate their strengths and encourage them to use their multiple intelligences to promote themselves in school, in their hobbies and eventually making choices regarding a possible profession.
What is the return for having our children look at themselves? THE BEGINNING OF SUCCESS!!

Motivation and Our Children

Motivation-is it a process or product?
For some of our children a "failure mind" begins when the repeated failure is seen and the belief "I can't succeed or I can't do this" begins to become internalized and destructive but if our children believe "I can do this or I a going to do my best" a cycle of success and constructive behaviors will most likely perpetuate success.

For all of us, we must continually look at our interactions with "our" children-our own, those we mentor, coach, teach, or interact with in some form-and work to positively motivate them: promoting a positive interaction with others and the environment; teaching all of our children to internalize and formulate successful personal thoughts, feelings and beliefs; and exhibit that "successful thinking" in all that we do or attempt.

It truly is not the winning but our positive attitude about what we do, how we do it, how hard we are willing to try and our belief that we have done our personal best.

OBPP

We are well into our classroom lessons in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. It is a continuing learning process for all of us. We are seeing positive results, but like the turtle in the race we are approaching things in a slow and steady pace. If you have any questions about OBPP, please call the school and ask for me or if you would like to get involved with the program, please let me know, too.

School-Wide OBPP Kick-off

Our school-wide kick-off for the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program was presented to the entire student body with only a few technical problems. Students were attentive and participated when asked. Many thanks to the teachers and students for such a great start to this program. Each grade level at TMS has a different T-Shirt designed by a student from that grade level. All students who entered the T-Shirt design contest have their design, in a poster form, displayed throughout our building. Many thanks to all our participants.
Our classroom meetings began on Friday, October 9, 2009, with our second classroom meeting held on October 14th. We are proceeding through the beginning sessions as prescribed by the program which include: 1. deciding each individual classroom's rules and 2. discussing each of the Bullying Prevention Rules beginning with We Will Not Bully Others, We Will Try To Help Students Who Are Bullied, We Will Try To Include Students Who Are Left Out, If We Know That Somebody Is Being Bullied We Will Tell An Adult At School And An Adult At Home.
